(For hawker kings, MRT navigators, and anyone who wants to survive the humidity with style)

Greetings & Polite Basics

  • Hello: Hello lah [heh-lo lah]

  • Thank you: Terima kasih [te-ree-mah kah-seh]

  • Sorry / Excuse me: Paiseh [pie-seh]

  • Yes / No: Ya / Tidak [yah / tee-dahk]

  • Goodbye: Bye lah [bye lah]

Eating & Drinking

  • Delicious: Shiok! [shee-yok]

Say it after laksa or chicken rice. Even the uncle selling noodles will grin.

  • Coffee: Kopi [koh-pee]

  • Water: Air [ah-yer]

  • Vegetarian: Sayur [sah-yur]

Getting Around

  • Taxi / Grab / MRT: Taxi / Grab / MRT

  • How much?: Berapa? [buh-rah-pah]

  • Where is…?: Di mana? [dee mah-nah]

  • Stop here: Berhenti sini [ber-hen-tee see-nee]

Emergencies & Health

  • Help!: Tolong! [toh-long]

  • Hospital: Hospital [hos-pee-tal]

  • I need a doctor: Saya perlukan doktor [sah-yah per-loo-kan dok-tor]

💡 Tuk Tip: End sentences with “lah” and you’re halfway to local cool points. (“Ok lah,” “Can lah,” “Nice lah.”)

Local Quirks & Customs

  • Queue culture: Respect lines everywhere - don’t be the rogue tourist.

  • Hawker etiquette: Order politely, say “lah” at the end, smile at vendors.

  • Food culture: Shiok! is a required exclamation.

  • Footwear & cleanliness: Shoes off indoors or in some temples; streets are clean, littering is frowned upon.

  • Tuk-tuk / Grab: Grab works everywhere - tuk-tuks are not common, but scooters exist in outskirts.

💡 Tuk Tip: Add “lah” to your sentences for instant local charm. Bonus: trying a durian? Only

with a grin and bravery.
