(Laid-back riverside vibes, sticky rice aficionados, Beerlao enthusiasts)

Greetings & Polite Basics

  • Hello: Sabaidee [sah-bai-dee]

  • Thank you: Khop chai [khawp chai]

  • Sorry / Excuse me: Khaw thot [khaw thot]

  • Yes / No: Jao / Baw [chow / baw]

Eating & Drinking

  • Delicious: Sep lai [sep lie]

Perfect to say while enjoying khao niao with mango. Bonus if you do a little happy dance.

  • Water: Nam [nahm]

  • Beer: Bia (Beerlao, naturally 🍺)

  • Sticky rice: Khao niao [cow nee-ow]

Getting Around

  • Tuk-tuk: Tuk-tuk (international, still works!)

  • Left / Right / Straight: Sai / Khua / Trong pai [sai / khoo-ah / trong pie]

  • How much?: Tao dai? [tao dai]

  • Stop here: Jod tee nee [jot tee nee]

Emergencies & Health

  • Help!: Soi nyang! [soy nyang]

  • Doctor: Mor [maw]

  • Hospital: Hong mor [hong maw]

Local Quirks & Customs

  • Sabaidee spirit: Smile, greet, and you instantly belong. Lao people love calm friendliness.

  • Feet etiquette: Feet are low, head is high — don’t point your feet at people or Buddha statues.

  • Temple protocol: Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes, whisper your awe.

  • Lao clock: “Now” is flexible. Relax, sip Beerlao, enjoy life’s pace.

  • Tuk-tuk haggling: Gentle smiles and a playful attitude work better than hard bargaining.

💡 Tuk Tip: Take your time crossing streets — Lao drivers are patient, so should you be.
