Greetings & Polite Basics

  • Hello: Xin chào [sin chow]

  • Thank you: Cảm ơn [gahm uhn]

  • Sorry / Excuse me: Xin lỗi [sin loy]

  • Yes / No: Vâng / Không [vun / khong]

Eating & Drinking

  • Delicious: Ngon quá [ngawn kwah]

Say this after pho or bánh mì — it’s basically magic.

  • Water: Nước [nook]

  • Beer: Bia [bee-ah]

  • Coffee: Cà phê [cah-fey]

  • Vegetarian: Ăn chay [an chai]

Getting Around

  • Where is…?: Ở đâu? [uh dow]

  • How much?: Bao nhiêu? [bow nyew]

  • Bus / Train: Xe buýt / Tàu hỏa [say boot / tao hwa]

  • Stop here: Dừng ở đây [zoong uh day]

Emergencies & Health

  • Help!: Cứu với! [koo voy]

  • Doctor: Bác sĩ [bahk see]

  • Pharmacy: Hiệu thuốc [hee-ow thook]

Local Quirks & Customs

  • Street crossing: Walk steadily; scooters will part like water around a rock. Running = guaranteed freak-out.

  • Shoes off indoors: Entering homes or temples? Take them off. Don’t look at the pile of shoes nervously; it’s normal.

  • Coffee culture: Ice coffee with condensed milk = daily survival fuel.

  • Respect elders: Nod, smile, and avoid loud arguments in public.

  • Market etiquette: Touch lightly, ask prices politely, show excitement when buying — sellers love it.

💡 Tuk Tip: Learning “Cảm ơn” (thank you) goes further than your backpack full of travel gadgets.
